Next Generation Science Standards Generation Science StandardsThe Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) provide a framework for three-dimensional science teaching and learning in grades K-12 and set expectations for what students should be able to know and do in science. The NGSS were adopted by the Board of Education in February 2016 and will be fully implemented in schools by the 2019-20 school year.
Advanced Placement PlacementStudents may receive college credit if they receive a score of 3 or more on the AP exam taken in May. Students may take an AP exam without enrolling in an AP course; most high schools offer an array of these courses. AP exams are optional.

ACT makes the ACT with writing available for grade 11 to measure student progress toward and readiness for post-secondary plans. The exam is optional. The ACT Aspire exams for grades 8-10 have been eliminated from the Hawai‘i DOE testing portfolio.

Dual credit programs credit programsDual Credit allows Hawaii DOE high school students to take classes that satisfy requirements for both a Hawaii high school diploma and a University of Hawaii degree. Nine UH campuses are participating. Students attending other college institutions should check whether the credits can transfer. The two most common programs are Early College and Running Start.

Professional Development DevelopmentBeyond curricular supports, the Department makes professional development opportunities available to teachers and support staff. In addition, the Leadership Institute was created in 2013 with the goal to align the Department's training and development opportunities into an educational/skills pipeline that would also cultivate a culture of leadership among teachers and principals.
Early Childhood ChildhoodEarly Childhood Education includes programs and services for children from birth through age 8. The Department offers direct services to all children in grades K-3 and for 3- and 4-year-olds in special education. Gifted and Talented and TalentedThe Gifted and Talented Program develops statewide policies and research-based standards, provides leadership, technical assistance and monitoring guidelines for quality gifted and talented education for the state. With available resources, each school designs programs to serve the needs of identified gifted/talented students; these differentiated programs include enrichment activities, acceleration and/or honors classes.
English Language Learners Language LearnersStudents with limited English language proficiency require support and targeted instruction. The Department provides these students with supplementary instructional and acculturation activities.
Arts programs at our public schools teach students to see and understand the world around them, and interpret that understanding through their own unique lens. Students develop visually literate and aesthetically sensitive skills.
STEM education integrates the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics by using scientific inquiry and engineering design as unifying processes. STEM emphasizes innovation and the development of problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills. Emphasizing arts creates engaging new pathways for learning.
Hawaii Common Core Common CoreHawaii Common Core Standards define the knowledge and skills students need to succeed in college and careers when they graduate. They align with college and workforce expectations, are clear and consistent, include rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher-order skills, are evidence-based, and are informed by standards in top-performing countries.
Learner Outcomes OutcomesThe Department's General Learner Outcomes (GLOs) are the overarching goals of standards-based learning for all students in all grade levels.
Smarter Balanced BalancedThe Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) are aligned to the Hawaii Common Core Standards, and designed to measure whether students are "on track" for readiness in college and/or career. These are mandatory assessments given to students in grades 3-8 and 11.
