14 top-performing schools awarded $1 million
Hawaii's high-perfoming public schools received $1 million for exceptional achievement as part of the state’s new Strive HI System. Funds will be used to support initiatives to sustain success. STORY  

SUPT. MATAYOSHI RATED 'EXCEPTIONAL' BY BOARD OF EDUCATION
Supt. Kathryn Matayoshi has earned the top rating of "exceptional" from the Hawaii State Board of Education in her annual job performance evaluation. Members praised the DOE's progress on a host of initiatives to improve student outcomes. STORY  

APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR 2014 SPELLING BEE
Schools may enroll for the 2014 aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee by registering with the national bee through Oct. 15. Cost is $120. The 2013 state champion was 8th grader Akira Takabayashi from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle on Kauai. GO TO SITE  

HOKULEA AND HIKIANALIA EXTEND TOUR THROUGH ISLANDS
Before launching its Worldwide Voyage to more than 20 countries to promote ocean sustainability and education, the Polynesian Voyaging Society has extended ports of call in the Islands to connect with more schools for student tours. STORY  

JVEF RECOGNIZES MILITARY VOLUNTEERS AT HAWAII SCHOOLS
More than 300 people attended the Joint Venture Education Forum's 12th annual meeting Aug. 29 in Kapolei. Military personnel who volunteer at local schools were recognized. STORY
