HIDOE schools nab 41 awards at Student Television Network competition

Students from 10 Hawai‘i public schools received 41 awards in various digital media and filmmaking categories at the Student Television Network (STN) competition in Long Beach, Calif.

Students from 10 Hawai‘i public schools received 41 awards in various digital media and filmmaking categories at the Student Television Network (STN) competition that took place March 14-17 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif.

"I'm so proud of the upcoming generation of creative storytellers and visual artists emerging from our Hawai'i public schools. They have demonstrated year after year that they have the talent and knowledge to excel in the competitive arena of digital media on a national scale," Superintendent Keith Hayashi said. "Mahalo to our partner, PBS Hawai'i, for helping to cultivate these skills and providing our students with a platform to shine each week on HIKI NŌ."

The schools that competed are also participants of HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawai‘i, the first and only weekly student news show with a statewide network of schools.

“The PBS Hawai‘i ‘ohana is extremely proud of the hardworking students and dedicated teachers who put their heart and soul into the STN conference and our HIKI NŌ program,” said Brent Keane, Director of Learning Initiatives at PBS Hawai‘i. “We will continue to support students and teachers and encourage them to utilize PBS Hawai‘i’s multiple platforms to lift their voices and share their amazing stories.”

  • Honouliuli Middle

  • Kalāheo High

  • Kaua‘i High

  • Kealakehe High

  • Maui Waena Middle

  • Moanalua High

  • Moanalua Middle

  • Wai‘anae High 

  • Wai‘anae Intermediate

The STN competition is an annual event that draws middle and high school students from media programs across the country to compete in digital media competitions such as podcasts, music videos, short films, news stories, commercials and more. Students are given the prompts the day of and are given 3-6 hours, depending on the category, to produce and edit their project. 

In addition to the STN contest awards, school media programs were given these excellence awards for their work conducted throughout the school year.

  • Outstanding Achievement: News Magazine

Kealakehe High School

Kaua‘i High School
  • Distinguished Merit: News Magazine
  • Outstanding Achievement: Daily Taped News Show
Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School
  • Outstanding Achievement: Middle School Broadcast
Maui Waena Intermediate School
  • Outstanding Achievement: Middle School Broadcast

Including Kamehameha Maui middle school and Hawai‘i Technology Academy, Hawai‘i schools took home 46 awards overall from the competition.
