Waiver sought for School Improvement Grants for Fiscal Years 2015, 2016

School Improvement Grants (SIG) enable eligible schools to improve the quality of instruction and increase the academic achievement of students. The waiver will extend the use of funds to 2018.

​​​​DOE logoThe Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) intends to request a waiver to Section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act (20 U.S.C. § 1225(b)) to extend the period of availability of school fiscal year (FY) 2015 and FY 2016 School Improvement Grant (SIG)​ funds for the State Education Agency and all of its complexes to September 30, 2018.

A waiver will increase HIDOE’s ability to implement the SIG program to improve the quality of instruction and increase the academic achievement of students in the state's Strive HI Priority status schools.

The waiver request is in accordance with guidance issued by the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) in January 2010 on using SIG funds and, if granted, will allow HIDOE to use these funds in accordance with USDOE SIG requirements published in the Federal Register in January 2010.
