Pursuant to section 8401 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) is requesting a waiver for the period of availability of funds in section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA) as a result of ongoing challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, HIDOE is requesting a 12-month extension of the September 30, 2022 date of the 2020 and 2021 federal fiscal year funds for the following programs:
- Title I, Part C of the ESEA (Education of Migratory Children); and
- Title IV, Part A of the ESEA (Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants).
If granted, the waiver will provide HIDOE with continued flexibility to spend down vital federal funds that will assist HIDOE’s ability to coordinate innovative approaches to maintain the continuity of learning for all Hawaii public school students.
- HIDOE's waiver request can be viewed here.
We appreciate any feedback regarding Hawaii’s waiver request for an extension of the period of availability of funds pursuant to section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA).
