​Hilo High's School Community Council has taken an active role in developing the schools academic and financial plan. The council provides a venue for the school’s stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, school staff, parents, students and community members, to exchange ideas and participate in the school improvement process.

The Parent Teacher Student Association provides parental perspectives and suggestions on how to improve student achievement. The Hilo High School Foundation also supports the school by funding teacher-initiated activities with grants. School and business relationships are close.

Hilo High has a Kaiapuni (Hawaiian immersion) school, Nawahiokalani‘opu‘u​.
