The Department of Education is in the process of building Kūlanihākoʻi High School in Kihei to serve South Maui families.
"Kūlanihākoʻi High School" was approved by the Board of Education as the official name on Aug. 18, 2022, in accordance with Board of Education policy
. The name Kihei high school was previously used as a placeholder during development.
The campus is being built in phases. Future phases will be dependent on the availability of funding. Click on the location map for details.
- Phase 1: Mass grading and infrastructure.
- Phase 2: Administration, classroom buildings, library/cafeteria, PE locker rooms, basketball court, temporary playfield.
- Phase 3: Buildings to support electives.
- Future phases: Gymnasium, track and football field, basketball courts, tennis courts, additional classroom buildings, softball field, baseball field, soccer field, open play field.
Design plans call for accommodating approximately 400 students at the end of Phase 2 construction.
Primary access to the new school will be provided via an extension of Kulanihakoi Street mauka of Piilani Highway. A key issue regarding site access is the means by which students walk to and from the school and cross the highway in the vicinity of the Kulanihakoi Street/Piilani Highway intersection.
A grade-separated pedestrian crossing — such as an overpass or underpass — is a state Land Use Commission condition that the Department is requesting being amended to allow the school to open without it.
The Department had interpreted the condition as required when warranted by a technical study. The DOE is committed to providing an updated traffic / grade separated pedestrian crossing warrant study.
The land commission voted in 2019 to restate the intent of its imposed highways/road improvements condition for the project, affirming that a pedestrian overpass or underpass be built across Pi'ilani Highway before the opening of the campus.
The Department’s Motion to Amend before the LUC (Docket A11-794) is seeking to allow the school to open with a roundabout and on grade crossing, with a commitment for future studies for providing a grade separated pedestrian crossing, starting with a study one year after the school opens.
Sept. 2, 2022: Community input on pedestrian crossing study for Kūlanihāko‘i High School in Kīhei requested via survey
Aug. 18, 2022: Kūlanihākoʻi High School approved as new Kīhei campus name
