NGSS: Standards Alignment

Implementation of Next Generation Science Standards is being guided by input from multiple stakeholders. Here, resources by grade level for standards alignment.

Grades K-12

Framework book
  • A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field.
  • NGSS Performance Expectations from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). Topics arranged in tables by Grade Band, and then further broken down into columns of Life Science, Earth & Space Science, and Physical Science. The Engineering Design topic is located at the end of the respective grade band.
  • NGSS Performance Expectations from the nextgenscience.org website. Tool is sortable by grade, practice, crosscutting concept, discipline and disciplinary core area.
  • Guide to Implementing the Next Generation Science Standards. From the National Academies Press.

Grades K-5

  • Hawaii DOE Elementary Crosswalk. Developed by the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support, and the Science Work Group of classroom teachers, resource teachers, and administrators.

Grades 6-8

Grades 9-12

  • Model Course Mapping. NSTA resources to organize the grade banded performance expectations into courses. Known as Appendix K.
