STUDENT SUCCESS INDICATOR

3rd Grade Literacy. Percentage of 3rd graders demonstrating reading of “At or Near” or “Above” grade-level expectation on Smarter Balanced Assessment.

Rationale: Reading at grade level by 3rd grade is a critical milestone of student success because literacy is a foundation for future learning. The PK-12 reading continuum can be thought of this way: Learn to read by 3rd grade to have the foundation to read to learn. Our focus has been to continue to ensure a solid core curriculum for all students, one that fully addresses the big ideas in reading, and to ensure that all students have the foundational reading skills they will need to be successful when tackling text of increasing complexity in upper grades.
