Ho‘oha‘aheo Newsletter, Aug. 17

Our monthly online publication to highlight bright spots from across the public school system. This week's issue includes an update on DOH guidance.

Aug. 17

Editorial Mission: As the Department’s primary publication, we aim to live up to the meaning of ha‘aheo — to cherish with pride — by bolstering and sustaining pride in public education and touting the successes happening across our system.

The Department released updates to its COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidance on Monday to incorporate the Department of Health (DOH) and CDC’s latest guidance for K-12 schools. Some of the significant updates include:

  • No longer requiring quarantine for non-school exposure;
  • Prioritizing screening testing for high-risk activities such as before and after events and following breaks; and
  • Removing the recommendations for ‘ohana bubbles or cohorting and physical distancing.
The DOH has since made subsequent updates to its guidance for schools this week that the Department is now working to review and incorporate into our guidance. Updates to the Department's COVID protocols for participation in athletic activities for student-athletes and staff are also forthcoming.

We asked some special guests to complete the sentence below.

“Great things are happening in Hawai‘i public schools. My top priority this school year is to ______.”

" ...to strengthen our three PreK-12 complexes to ensure a strong systemic alignment for students' learning success."
Veteran educator Daniel Hamada was appointed as interim complex area superintendent for Kaua‘i in July. Hamada retired in December 2018 as principal of Kapa‘a High after more than 40 years as an educator and leader in the Department.

" ...work closely with our schools, families and community stakeholders to strengthen the learning environments across our campuses by supporting and addressing the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of our students. They need all of us, united in our efforts, now more than ever.”
Stacey Bello was appointed as interim complex area superintendent for Ka‘ū-Kea‘au-Pāhoa in May. Bello’s 25-year educational journey includes serving as a special education teacher, district special education resource teacher, vice principal and principal.

Family Focus

Expect heavier traffic this week as 50,000 additional private school and college students head back to campuses. To help mitigate traffic delays, the Hawai‘i State Department of Transportation encourages drivers to:

» Ensure vehicles are well maintained to help avoid stalls or crashes.

» Plan routes before getting on the road. Utilize resources like goakamai.org, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze or local media outlets to help find the most efficient route and the amount of time needed to get to your destination.

» Be mindful of peak traffic times of 5–9 a.m. and 3–7 p.m.

» Consider alternative transportation modes like the bus or city bikes.

» Ensure safety is the top priority regardless of what time you need to be at a location.
