Dec. 7

Editorial Mission: As the Department's primary publication, we aim to live up to the meaning of ha‘aheo – to cherish with pride – by bolstering and sustaining pride in public education and touting the successes happening across our system.

As we continue to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, caring for the social-emotional health as well as the physical well-being of our students and staff is an important part of our commitment to Nā Hopena A‘o — particularly the "T" in BREATH for Total Well-Being.

A great example of this recently was the ‘Aiea-Moanalua-Radford Complex Area's first-ever AMR Wellness Day, where students in secondary fully self-contained classes were invited to participate in physical activities in an inclusive environment hosted by Radford High School and their student-athletes. The event showcased the complex area's commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and team work to strengthen collaboration and friendships while encouraging physical activity.

Our Communications team was invited to stop by and put together the highlight video above after speaking with students who said they enjoyed engaging with their special needs peers who might not have opportunities to participate in sports.

“The whole purpose is to show that as sports leaders and athletes that we can use physical activities to help stimulate social and emotional well-being at all learning levels,” Radford student-athlete Taejah Ray Telles-Kuwahara shared.

Fellow student-athlete Makenna Ching added: "At Radford High School, athletics is a privilege and honor, so it's great that we're able to work at these events and give back."

In honor of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we visited two of our military-impacted schools — Lt. Col. Horace Meek Hickam Elementary and Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary — to see how they recognize and pay tribute to history.
