Kula Kaiapuni ʻo Lahainaluna students share their pride as Hawaiian Language Immersion Program learners.

Ha'aheo wau i ka hele 'ana i ke Kula Kaiapuni no ka mea he mea ko'iko'i no'u ka mālama ʻana i ka ho'oilina o ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. He mea nui ka ʻōlelo a me ka ʻike Hawaiʻi i ko kākou poʻe a aʻo au i nā mea hou o koʻu lāhui i nā lā a pau. Hauʻoli a haʻaheo au i ka hele ʻana i ke Kula Kaiapuni me koʻu mau hoapapa mai ka papa mālaaʻo a i kēia manawa!

I am proud to go to Kula Kaiapuni because it is important to me to continue the legacy of the Hawaiian language. Hawaiian language and knowledge are important to our people and I learn new things about my culture every day. I am happy and proud to be a Kula Kaiapuni student with my Kaiapuni classmates from kindergarten to now!

Haʻaheo au i koʻu kūlana ma ke ‘ano he haumāna Kula Kaiapuni no ka mea hiki iaʻu k e hoʻomau i ka hoʻoilina no na hanauna e hiki mai ana. ‘Aʻole nui nā kānaka e aʻo ana i ko lākou ‘olelo makuahine. Ua pōmaikaʻi nō au e aʻo a ‘ōlelo i koʻu makana o ka ‘ōlelo makuahine. Makemake au e paipai i nā kānaka e hoʻomaka a i ‘ole holomua ma ke alahele o ko lākou ‘ōlelo makuahine. Ua hāʻawi ka DOE i nā Hawaiʻi i kekahi papahana kūpono e aʻo a hoʻōla hou i ka ʻike i ʻaihue ʻia a aʻo hou i nā mea i poina ʻia. Haʻaheo au i ke aʻo ‘ia ma ke ‘ano hoʻonaʻauao o nā kupuna.

I am proud to be a Kula Kaiapuni student because I have the chance to continue a legacy that will be continued for generations to come. Many don’t have the chance to continue the ancient language of their ancestors in which I have the privilege and honor of being blessed with this gift of speaking Hawaiian. I encourage and hope to inspire others to begin or continue their journey of speaking their native language. The DOE program has given Hawaiians the opportunity to learn what was stolen and to reteach what has been forgotten. I am very proud and honored to be educated in the way of my ancestors.
