In the Jan. 2025 report to the Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Keith Hayashi provided updates on new leadership appointments in the department and recent awards and recognitions for students, employees and schools.


In the Jan. 2025 report to the Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Keith Hayashi provided updates on new leadership appointments in the department including:

  • Deputy Superintendent for Operations Dean Uchida,

  • Interim Assistant Superintendent for the Office of Student Support Services Kinau Gardner,

  • Assistant Superintendent for the Office of Information Technology Services Amy Peckinpaugh,

  • Castle-Kahuku Complex Area Superintendent Sam Izumi,  

  • Leilehua-Mililani-Waialua Complex Area Superintendent Ernest Muh, and 

  • Baldwin-Kekaulike-Kūlanihāko‘i-Maui Complex Area Superintendent Lori Yatsushiro.

For awards and recognitions, Superintendent Hayashi recognized the six Hawai‘i teachers statewide who recently won the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation’s highest honor for science and math teachers. He also recognized student teams from Baldwin High, Palisades Elementary, and ʻĪao Intermediate schools, who won $5,000 per team in the Design Intelligence Lab contest for creating a chatbot using artificial intelligence to address real-world student issues. Lastly, he shared about McKinley High School’s new athletic complex which just broke ground in December. Once completed in 2026, it will include bleacher seats for over 2,400, modern restrooms, a ticket booth, and a rooftop press box.
