In his July 2023 report to the Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Keith Hayashi shared updates — organized around the Strategic Plan priorities — on summer learning programs and preparations for the start of the 2023-24 school year.
Highlights include:
- Roughly 26,000 students enrolled in summer learning offerings, according to preliminary numbers. Superintendent Hayashi elaborated on a few of the programs, including the Seamless Summer Option meal program, Kindergarten Summer Start, high school athletic camps and summer internships.
- The Office of Talent Management has successfully filled hundreds of teaching positions for the new school year and welcomed experienced educators from the Philippines over the summer as part of our international teacher recruitment effort.
- The Department's Hawai‘i Teacher Induction Center also organized summer learning opportunities for beginning teachers and teachers participated in externship opportunities with Hawai‘i Pacific Health to help elevate our workforce-readiness initiatives in schools.
- Superintendent Hayashi also shared recent awards and recognitions students, employees and schools have received.
