In a report before the Board of Education's Oct. 4, 2023 special meeting, Superintendent Keith Hayashi and Deputy Superintendent Tammi Oyadomari-Chun provided an update on the reopening of Lāhainā schools.

Highlights include:

• Lāhainā staff set to return to their respective campuses this week and welcome students after fall break.
  
• A health and safety guidance, focusing especially on air quality monitoring and mitigation steps, will be released before staff go back to the campuses.
  
• The guidance will supplement regular school emergency procedures and each school’s revised Emergency Action Plan, which will also address establishing alternative emergency access and exit paths.
  
• We are working with the state Department of Transportation and Maui County Fire Department on evacuation routes and procedures. We are submitting Requests for Assistance to HIEMA to create secondary evacuation routes.
  
• The DOH has installed air quality monitors at all of the three campuses and makai of the Lahaina bypass road. Each school will have a designated administrator who will be responsible for monitoring changes in air quality. Over 300 indoor air filters will be distributed at each of the campuses.
  
• Data for the three schools from Maui County’s Department of Water Supply indicated “non­detect” for “all volatile compounds” at the campuses.
  
• Results from the soil tests were all within standards and are safe. 
• All of the test results are posted on the Department website.
  
• Mental health support for employees and students will be available in-person and virtually.
  
• 99.9% of contact achieved with students who “pre-registered” for Lāhainā schools.
  
• Maui ‘Ohana Resource Fair to be held on Oct. 12 at The Westin in Ka‘anapali for Maui families.
