In the September 2024 report to the Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Keith Hayashi provided an update on student transportation, operational updates, student attendance, and recent recognitions within the Department.

Superintendent Hayashi discussed the ongoing bus driver shortage, sharing that 96 of the 138 suspended routes have been restored, and emphasized the Department’s ongoing efforts to restore the remaining 42 suspended routes.

The report’s operational updates addressed the delayed teacher paychecks, as well as the U.S. Department of Education’s approval of amendments to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to align federal accountability requirements with our Strategic Plan.

The launch of the Department’s multi-year attendance awareness campaign was also announced in effort to support the Strategic Plan’s goal of having students attending 90% or more of instructional days.

Superintendent Hayashi ended his report with the recognition of the 2024 Complex Area and Charter School Teachers of the Year, and celebrating the recently awarded $60 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to advance literacy practices in public schools over the next five years.
