Video: Maui High School's Arts and COMmunication (ACOM) program won 1st place in the Public Service Announcement category for its 30-second spot on nutrition, above.
Hawaii's middle schools made a statement at the 14th annual
Student Television Network (STN) national convention, held in March in Anaheim, Calif. Of the 30 awards earned by Hawaii's public schools, nearly half were awarded to Maui Waena Intermediate and Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle.
Both schools won seven awards each, including 1st place finishes in the Broadcast News Magazine category (Maui Waena) and Nat Package (Kamakahelei).
Among Hawaii's public high schools, Moanalua High's MeneMAC team garnered four awards including a 1st place finish in the STN Convention Recap category (see video below). The full list of national winners can be seen
here.
Thousands of students from across the country gathered at the Hilton Anaheim for four days of competition and workshops. Students were given strict time deadlines, often only a few hours, to conceptualize, write, shoot and edit their entries on site. In the “Crazy 8s” competitions, for example, students completed four-minute newscasts or films in eight hours. Teachers were not allowed to help.
Hawaii's competing schools in the STN are also participants in PBS Hawaii’s
HIKI NŌ learning initiative. In this statewide program, students learn workforce and life skills through the creation of video news stories. These stories air Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. on
PBS Hawaii.
