Kalani boys soccer topples Punahou for title

09-Feb-2013

En route to its first boys’ soccer title, the Kalani Falcons needed every kick to beat perennial soccer power Punahou, 3-2 in penalty kicks, in the Division I boys’ soccer championship game.

The Falcons began their improbable run to glory as an unseeded, fifth place team from the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

Senior all-star forward Leo Klink scored his Division I-leading 25th and 26th goals of the season in the 23rd and 58th minutes of the game. Both goals tied the score with Punahou in the game. Ryan Bui, Steve Teshima and Klink scored the penalty kicks for Kalani. The game marked a rematch between the two teams that met in the 2011 semi-finals, when Kalani beat Punahou, but lost to Mililani in the 2011 championship.
