Storm forces closure of all public schools, offices on Friday

07-Aug-2014

Public schools and offices will be closed Aug. 8 due to severe weather associated with Hurricane Iselle. Employees also will not report to work so they may prepare for the storm.

HONOLULU – The Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) will close all public schools and DOE offices statewide on Friday, Aug. 8, in addition to today’s closures on Hawaii Island and Maui County (Maui, Molokai, Lanai). Closures are being made in anticipation of severe weather. Additionally, all inter-scholastic athletic events and student activities are canceled until schools reopen.

Per Governor Neil Abercrombie’s emergency declaration, DOE employees will not be reporting to work.

“We have been advising our schools to prepare for the worst and will assess any potential damage to our facilities once we receive the all-clear,” said Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi. “We will continue to monitor both storms and will make another announcement regarding whether school will be in session on Monday.”

“I want to thank our principals for their leadership as well as our students’ families for their patience and cooperation during this emergency,” Matayoshi said.
